Bottled Up
Using the artforms of photography, ceramics, sign painting, and assemblage, Bottled Up is an exhibition by Jae Mo and Kevin Hennessy about the roads that carry us and the stories we learn along the way. Inspired by their extensive travels through the United States, Mo and Hennessy offer us a new approach to seeing and encourages us to stop and check out the unique creations that pop up mile after mile.
On the road, Mo and Hennessy seek out human created environments such as grottos and castles, made by people for no other reason than their devotion. Some are spiritually or religiously inspired, while others are simply a person’s life’s work. The intricacies of these environments are then carried into Bottled Up through texture, imagery, and the form of a bottle itself.
The bottle then functions as a vessel for the miles traveled, the stories told, and the friends made throughout. They become representations of the long days and late nights spent exploring, creating, and reminiscing and contain memories and literal items gathered along the way.
Each piece works as both a story and a poem. Come see the show and learn some of these roadside wonders through the end of August.
Jae Mo is a self taught sign painter and folk artist currently based in Denver, Colorado. She works in a variety of materials spanning from ceramics to fiber, murals and sign restoration, dream like assemblages to folky illustration. Sometimes combining irregular elements and concepts inspired by her frequent road tripping, roadside attractions and objects discovered along the way. Jae Mo’s recent works tell the stories of the strangers you meet while driving through unknown places.
Her previous work in archives informs her artistic and personal practice as she investigates our relationships with the objects we collect and the creation of the personal archive. She has been an Artist in Residence at Elsewhere Studios, Sawbill Surf Club, and is a current Resident at The Temple in Denver, CO. She has shown at Alto Gallery, Emmanuel Gallery, Rosehouse, Pablo’s Coffee, Down at Lulu’s, and Metropolis Coffee.
Born and bred Denver artist Kevin Hennessy spends his off hours on artworks sculpted from street scraps and track side trash. His pieces are often painted or mounted on leftover materials from his commercial art professions: painting signs and tattooing. Embellished with junk shop rejected ephemera, these leftovers and throwaways are organized into unique visual stories: Sorts of poems collaged out of classic symbols and raw materials hunted from the corners of his day to day.
His work has been shown in galleries around Denver (Alto, Gildar, Emmanuel gallery). As well as featured in Spring Break Art Fair 2023 (via Upper Market Gallery in SF). Alongside his partner Jaemo and brother Lynn, their recognizable sign and mural work polka dot Denver and other towns across the USA.
